Create Transliteration Text

Translateration can be entered in quite a number of ways. WebGlyph is committed to remain compatible with input-texts that were created in the 1980s, but also wants to support modern coding mechanisms such as Unicode.

This tool offers the ability to create transliteration texts, which then can be transferred into documents, both as Unicode, which can be inserted into any modern text processor, as well as into WebGlyph input-texts, coded as per the Manuel de Codage.

To create a transliteration text, either type text in the either of the two input-boxes, or click on the symbols in the line under the boxes. When one of the symbols under the boxes is clicked, that symbol will be entered in the box labeled "Transliteration", and the code from the Manuel de Codage will be entered in the box labeled "Code". (Before clicking on any symbol underneath the boxes, be sure the cursor is positioned as desired in the box labeled "Transliteration".) When text is typed in either of the two boxes, the corresponding text will be updated in the other box.

When the transliteration text is complete, the standard copy/paste method can be utilized to include the text in the appropriate documents.

How to use the Group Editor Program

Any number of symbols can be included in a group, and in any orientation. Select a symbol by entering its Gardiner code (A1, B2, etc.) in the box labeled “Add symbol”, and then click on the button labeled “Add one symbol”.

The new symbol will appear in the upper left corner. Using the marking on the right lower corner of the symbol, the symbol can be re-sized to any level of magnification (or reduction). Note that the relation between height and width will not be distorted.

A symbol can be moved to any location within the grid by clicking on any location within the rectangle for the symbol, and dragging it to the desired location.

When symbols overlap, it may be hard to click on the right symbol to drag or re-size it, when that happens, click on the button labeled “Focus” for that symbol, and then drag or re-size it.

When a symbol was included in error, click on the button labeled “Remove” for that symbol, and it will be deleted.

The standard transformations can be applied to a symbol by adding the usual suffix:
   \h: A horizontal inversion, i.e. reflection over a vertical axis.
   \v: A vertical inversion, i.e. reflection over a horizontal axis.
   \r1: A rotation, counter-clockwise over 90°.
   \r2: A rotation, counter-clockwise over 180°.
   \r3: A rotation, counter-clockwise over 270°.
   \t1: A rotation, counter-clockwise over 90°, followed by a vertical inversion.
   \t2: A rotation, counter-clockwise over 180°, followed by a vertical inversion.
   \t3: A rotation, counter-clockwise over 270°, followed by a vertical inversion.

How to use the Digitizer program

Step 1a: select the image that you want to digitize.
Click on the button labeled “Upload Background Image”, and use your system’s directory-browser to select the file in question.
The image will be transmitted to the web-server, and the image will appear in, the area on the left-hand side of the page.
(Note: it may take a minute before the image will be fully uploaded...)

Step 1b: Or: select a symbol from one of the standard libraries (“Gardiner”, “GrecoRoman” or “WebGlyph”) using the input-box labeled “Copy library symbol”.
The selected image will be rendered in the large box, and can be edited using the steps below.
Note: while symbols can be fetched from the standard libraries in this manner, modified copies can only be saved as “personal” symbols.

Step 2: now you can start the digitizing process.
The radio-buttons labeled “Move” and “Draw” indicate how the next coordinate is to be processed.
Initially, “Move” is always selected. Once you have clicked in the drawing to the location that you want to “Move” to, the “Draw” button will automatically be selected.
Now you can click in the drawing on the locations to which you want to draw (a) line(s). Each line-fragment will immediately be added to the drawing (in red).
When you want to start a new series of line-segments, click on the radio-button labeled “Move” again.

It’s always hard to aim for the right coordinate. Remember that most web-browsers have a built-in capability to zoom in and zoom out... On Windows^TM Control-Shift-Plus zooms in (enlarges) and Control-minus zooms out (shrinks).

If you want to add a circle, or a circle-segment, click on the box with the type of circle(-segment) you want to add.
The radio-button labeled “Center” will automatically be selected.
Click on the location in the drawing that corresponds to the center of that circle(-segment).
The radio-button labeled “Radius” will automatically be selected.
Now click on an arbitrary location in the path of the circle(-segment), and the selected circle(-segment) will be added to the drawind (in red).

If you made any errors, components may be erased using the buttons labeled “Erase complete path” and “Erase last line-segment”.

Step 3: save the digitized information.
Enter a name in the box labeled “Name” and then click on the button labeled “Save”.
Please note that the Manuel de Codage requires that “personal” symbols must have a name that starts with “@”.

Assume that a symbol is saved under the name "@Abc". This symbol can be used later on simply by referring to it as @Abc. When multiple users have created symbols with the same name, the following rules apply:

A reference like @Abc will render the symbol by that name that was created by the user him/herself
If the user has not created a symbol by the name of @Abc, a reference to @Abc will render the symbol by the first user found who created such a symbol
A reference like @Abc@username will render the symbol that was created by the user with the specified name
(Note: the "Personal Catalog" will show which symbols by other users are available for general use.)

To retrieve an image that was created earlier, enter the name of the image in the text-box and click on the button labeled “Fetch”.

Symmetry
Sometimes an image contains components that are symmetric. When there are, click on the appropriate (horizontal or vertical) symmetry button, and click on the location of the axis of symmetry. Once clicked, a blue line will appear to indicate the location of that axis. If the axis did not end up in the right place, click again to correct the position.
Start creating the symmetric part by clicking on the button labeled “Move” or on the appropriate circle segment. Proceed as usual, but notice that the symmetric part will immediately be drawn in blue.
To end the symmetric part, click on the button labeled “End Symmetry”. The line for the axis will disappear, and the blue symmetric part will be re-drawn in red.

Corrections
Sometimes, some coordinates need to be “smoothed out”. When a point in the drawing didn't end up in the right place, click on the button labeled “Select Coordinate”, and then click on the location that needs to be corrected. A blue “X” will mark the location. Next, click on the location where that point should have been; the drawing will be updated accordingly.
When adjusting circle-segments, click on the center of the circle to move the location of the segment, and click on a point on the arc to change the radius of the circle.

Height of image
Normally, there will be no need to resize the image when it is being saved. If the height of the image needs to be a specific percentage of the height of a block, fill in that percentage in the box labeled “Resize image so that height becomes ... %”. When a value is entered into this box, the image will be resized when it is saved, so that the height becomes the desired amount.
