Creating the First Database

A new database is created, not from the New option in the File Menu, but from the System menu:

A window will pop up to conduct the dialog that establishes the parameters for the database to be created. This window follows the "windows" tradition that all functions that are not yet available appear "grayed out" until the appropriate parameters are entered.

Once a file name for the database container file has been entered, the "Create" button will become available, and it will become possible to modify the other fields.

The default size for the database is 1000 blocks (or 1 MB). Although it is always possible to extend the size of a database, it saves a lot of frustration to create the database with such an initial size that normal processing will be possible without running into any limitations.

Another term for database is "volume group", abbreviated VG. When an explicit name for this database is entered in this window, the database that is created here must always be referenced by that name. When the field for the "VG Name" is left blank in this dialog, a name will be created every time the database is mounted. Such an "on the fly" name will look like "__A", "__B", etcetera.

For the purpose of this demonstration, it is appropriate to accept all the defaults, so the "Create" button can be pressed.

While the database is being created, the window will lose focus:

And when the database has been created, a window will pop announcing that the database has been created successfully.

The newly created database is now ready to be mounted and used.
