This ballad must have sprung from the ashes of 'Sir Andrew Barton' (No, 161). E comes nearer than the others to the original, but sts. 11-13 are derived from No, 287, sts. 8, 10. Only one copy (A a) preserves the trait of Barton's death, an incident not quite in keeping with the rest of the story of the new ballad.
