Child Ballads - Brief Description by George Lyman Kittredge

145. Robin Hood and Queen Katherine

About half of A is lost, and the particulars of the outlaws' exploits are wanting in that version. Robin Hood has made Queen Katherine his friend by presenting her -with a sum of gold which he has taken from the king's harbingers. The king has offered a heavy wager that his archers cannot be excelled, and the queen may have her choice of all other bowmen in England. She summons Robin Hood and his men, who are to come to London under feigned names. No, 146 is a sequel to this ballad. For the adventure of the Bishop of Hereford cf. No, 144.
