COL specifies the columns in a table gadget, via descendant nodes of the form

^$W[INDOW] ( wname , gkeyword , gname , colkeyword , citem )

where

No value is present at the level of the COL elattribute itself. There is a value of emptystring at the citem level.

A COL elattribute descendant is present for every citem subscript that is present as a descendant of the CHOICE elattribute for the gadget. If an application assigns a CHOICE descendant with a citem subscript that is not present as a COL descendant, a COL descendant with that citem subscript is automatically created.

A COL elattribute descendant may be present with a citem subscript which is not present as a descendant of the CHOICE elattribute for the gadget. Such a citem subscript defines an empty column.
