3.2.8 Functions function

$A[SCII]( expr )

produces an integer value as follows:

  1. –1 if the value of expr is the empty string.
  2. Otherwise, an integer n associated with the leftmost character of the value of expr, such that $A($C(n)) = n.

$A[SCII]( expr1, intexpr2 )

is similar to $A(expr1) except that it works with the intexpr2th character of expr1 instead of the first. Formally, $A(expr1,intexpr2) is defined to be $A($E(expr1,intexpr2)).
