The original game, written in 1975 and 1976,
was based on Will Crowther’s maps and experiences
caving in Mammoth Cave in Kentucky,
the longest cave system in the world.
The first version was written for a PDP-10 system,
which has a 5-letter memory unit (35 bits).
Hence all vocabulary items are truncated to their
first 5 letters.
Later versions were ported to Unix (C-language),
and other PDP-11 systems (FORTRAN-language).
This version (M[UMPS]-language) is adapted from
the 1978 DECUS version for PDP-11.
The game starts with these credentials:
This program was originally developed by Willie Crowther. Most of the
features of the current program were added by Don Woods (Don o’Su-ai)
a F4P version was created by Steve Schoolman at Lockheed Solar Observatory.
This web-version was adapted by Ed de Moel.
